Photos from Day 2 of the 2009 Nationals.

This was the day of the Open Solos, plus Junior Ensembles. It ended with transfer from the EIT Campus into central Napier for the Champion of Champion contests at the Municipal Theatre. The number of results to be posted on the web plus the time cost of taking a single photo in normal competition meant that only the Junior and Open Champion of Champions were properly covered. All other photos were of people outside the contest Halls. Incidentally, Tiffen Park rises directly behind the Minicipal Theatre. I was there early in the morning, but I hope others went for a walk to relax before or after playing.

One unofficial contest was the height of the piano stool in the Open Champion of Champions.  The winner was Lee Martelli with it set in the Altissimo position. I took a picture of it in that 'four-crank-ups' position. This photo became somewhat poignant later when it was announced that there had been no nominations for Accompanist of the Year. Unaware of this, a number of Champions previously had strongly praised their accompanists, yet the formal accolade had been left vacant. Next year we expect a number of nominations.
